A terrific win for Torquay, their first over Argyle in the league since 1972!
The first half was dire from both teams. It was very compacted in midfield, and neither team could get the ball properly under control.
Whatever Martin Ling at half time did the trick though. Torquay came out fired up for the second half and scored twice in quick succession, especially Eunan O’Kane. He scored twice in quick succession. The first was an excellent finish from the edge of the area after the ball fell nicely to him. The second goal was class. O’Kane controlled the ball about 35 yards out, spotted the keeper off his line and lobbed him.
Danny Stevens added a third after an excellent run and finish, capitalising on a defensive error.
He has really come into his own this season, consistently excellent. He certainly has a future at a higher level to come and sadly for Torquay I can see someone taking a chance on him in January.
Working with Martin Ling seems to really be having a positive effect on Stevens. Ling stated earlier in the season that he was hoping to see him prove himself a regular place in the team. Stevens has really started to up his game. His passing has always been of a high quality, but he has started to regularly show the drive and dribbling with the ball we know he can do (as his goal proved). I still think in the long term his future may well still be in behind the striker, rather than on the wing. I don’t know if that will ever happen.
Oastler is another player who has really matured and grown into the team as the season has gone along. The first few games (especially away to Bristol Rovers) he was getting caught out of position or taken on too easily, but he is now very solid in defence and proving a worthwhile asset going forward too.
Next game I’m going to: home v Barnet on Fri 9th December – I hope, except that it’s the Torbay Lib Dems’ Xmas party on the same night too. Will have to negotiate that one…
